UPGRADING YOUR MS-DOS NUMERICAL RECIPES DISKETTE

This file contains the complete instructions for upgrading any Second
Edition Numerical Recipes MS-DOS diskette (as distributed by Cambridge
University Press) to the most current version (in this example,
version 2.06).

NOTE TO PREVIOUS UPGRADERS: The procedure is different, and we hope
more convenient, than in the past. Our new procedure uses (under
license) the respected .RTPATCH software of Pocket Soft, Inc. (All
necessary software is provided to you as part of the patch file.)

What you need:
  1. These instructions. Download and/or print them.
  2. ONE self-extracting patch file, either Fortran or C,
      with a name like F-206.EXE or C-206.EXE
Each file is capable of upgrading *all* previous 2nd
Edition releases in the respective language.
  3. Your original diskette, or else a hard-disk directory containing
the files from your original diskette. (The *.AR files are
      the crucial ones.)

Downloading hints:
Be sure that the self-extracting patch file is downloaded
as a binary file (i.e., is saved directly to your local disk).
On some WWW browsers, this requires holding down the SHIFT
key when you click on the link to the file. After saving
the file, check that is length in bytes is *exactly* as
  listed in the link text.

HOW TO DO THE UPGRADE:

Step 1. Execute the self-extracting patch file by typing its name at
a DOS prompt, in a directory that contains the file. It will extract
two files, RTPATCH.EXE and either F-206.RTP or C-206.RTP. If this step
fails, then it is likely that you did not succeed in downloading the
file in binary mode.

Step 2. Copy the two extracted files, and the files (preferably,
*all* the files) from your original Numerical Recipes diskette to a
common directory. In that directory, execute the appropriate command,

  RTPATCH F-206.RTP

or

  RTPATCH C-206.RTP

You will see a succession of informational messages as the files are
updated.

Step 3. Erase the files RTPATCH.EXE, and *.RTP, and copy the (now
updated) remaining files back to their original place. (If you copied
them from your original diskette, be sure to make a backup copy of it
before altering the original in this step.)

That's all there is to it! If you put the updated files back in
the same place on your hard disk as the original files, then you do
not need to reinstall the software. You may, of course, reinstall
the software if you wish.
